Synopsis

This dark comedy tells the story of Lum Wai Man, an unhinged Chinese actress who stalks another Chinese actress because she thinks they are the same casting type. Beneath her illegal pass time lies a deeper battle: in fragments, we see Wai Man struggling to contain her explosive rage, wreaking havoc on her personal and professional life. After one particularly intense outburst, Wai Man decides to try a different approach…

Tell me more…

This play uses absurdist humour and surrealist stagecraft to depict the chaotic inner world of a woman with C-PTSD lost on her way to recovery. Stage combat blends with clowning and physical theatre to create a bold, visually dynamic depiction of surviving complex trauma. Wai Man’s explosive anger is brought to life through visceral puppet storytelling. This is a story about generational trauma and the absurd and cyclical nature of recovery.

Development

Hater is coming back to London! First conceived in 2023, two excerpts of this play were presented at two sold out scratch nights in February 2024 and January 2025 respectively. After getting three 4-star reviews for our successful Brighton Fringe debut and performances as part of The Space Theatre’s summer season 2025, we will now be joining Lambeth Fringe at The Bread and Roses Theatre & coming back to The Space as part of Voila Festival!
